When President Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act into law in 1978, the Civil Aeronautics Board planned to offer up unused route authorities on a first-come, first-served basis. Previously having spend decades deciding who flew where, the CAB was now going

Braniff International BAe-146-200 | Flying Colors livery (what-if?) | 1980

Whenever I do one of my "what-if" works I try to frame it in the context of a plausible historical basis. I'll often get people ask me "Hey, how about doing Russian F-22 Raptors" or other concepts that for me, might look striking but are too highly implausible for me to consider.

Several years before Lamar Muse joined Herb Kelleher and Rollin King to form Southwest Airlines in 1971, Muse had already aviation ties to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in a leadership role as helping turn around the fortunes of the Fort Worth-based local service carrier Central Airlines.

Southwest Airlines 727-291 | N406BN | MSN 19991 | LN 521 | Current livery (what-if?)

Several weeks ago I posted my artwork of a Boeing 727-200 in United's current livery, a 727-200 in Northwest's final colors and one in Delta's new "Angry Widget" livery. This was my intro to that previous posting:

A sneak peek....

Posted 05-22-2010 at 02:33 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

I have a love for military adaptations of commercial jets and yes, I know that the KC-135 family isn't an adaptation of a commercial jet as it has its own design lineage, but it's close enough for me and growing up near an ANG tanker base, the take offs of KC-135As and KC-135Es was the closest I was going to living the glory that was the Boeing 707 and 720.

This sneak preview is of a print that's...

DFW | January 2010 | Founders' Plaza | Storm Front

Posted 05-22-2010 at 10:44 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

This was back on 28 January. Bizzaro day that was pretty much the only spring-like day for most of the winter. There were some rain showers from earlier in the day but a squall line from a frontal boundary was fast approaching and I thought it'd make an ominous backdrop for a panoramic shot of the UPS ramp.

Believe it or not this was about 3pm in the afternoon when the UPS flights all...

F-20A Tigershark | 147th Fighter Wing | "Ace in the Hole" | Texas Air National Guard | Ellington Field, Houston

One of my favorite jet fighters is the Northrop F-20 Tigershark. Originally conceived as the ultimate development of the F-5 (which started in the late 1950s as the F-5A Freedom Fighter, transformed in the early 1970s into the improved F-5E Tiger II and also shares...

Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) | DC-10 Series 10 | Hypothetical shocking pink colors

I had earlier posted my illustration of the DC-10 Series 10 in the red stripe colors of PSA and included an extensive history of PSA up to the point of the order of the L-1011 Tristar. Having done that artwork, it was only natural that I progressed to the DC-10 in the 1970s shocking pink color scheme.
