The Superfortress's Achilles Heel....

Rate this Entry

The biggest Achilles heel of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress was its Wright R-3350 radial engines- filled with glitches and prone to engine fires, things got so bad at one point that then-Senator Harry S Truman held committee hearings to look into the problem. While the engine design was partly to blame (the crankcase was made of a flammable magnesium metal), Wright Aeronautical was found to be sacrificing quality for quantity in ramping up engine production at the behest of pressure from USAAF to get the engine operational.
