Delta Air Lines DC-10 Series 10 N601DA (1972-1975)
![]() Delta Air Lines DC-10-10 | N601DA | MSN 47965 | LN 59 | 1972-1975 In 1971 Delta Air Lines ordered five McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Series 10s as insurance against possible delays in the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar program. They were ordered on 18 March 1971 and as Delta's Tristar deliveries proceeded, there were immediately sold to United who in turn leased them back to Delta who needed the widebody capacity beginning in November 1972. The five aircraft were N601DA, N602DA, N603DA, N604DA, and N605DA. They were all early model Series 10s (most notably having the hot section thrust reversers on the GE CF6 engines) and flew for Delta until May 1975 when the last Delta DC-10 was returned to United at the end of its lease. This particular print depicts the first Delta DC-10, N601DA which was built in August 1972. On its return to United, it flew as N1833U and is currently still active as an MD-10F freighter with FedEx as N377FE. Some detail views from this print: ![]() And an overview of the entire print (image watermarked, final print does NOT have the watermark): ![]() This print is 6 x 18 inches in size and is printed professionally on heavyweight paper in a high gloss finish that uses a subtle pearlescent photographic process to render the colors much more vibrantly than the previous print process I employed. Contact me for details. |

Don provided some welcome assistance in the research for this print and he'll be getting this one and the one that stems from this print on house for his help and advice.

Doc, I am glad that I was able to add something to this set of prints and they will be treasured additions to the "archives!" For me, the DC-10 never looked better than it did in the original "Widget," and you have captured its essence in wonderful fashion. I've got the perfect spot for them on the wall in my office, right below an 880 and a turbojet DC-8 and I can't wait! Thanks to you both.

The second print will be just like this one, only it will be of an ex-Western DC-10 in full Delta colors from the 1987-1989 period of Delta's history. Stay tuned.

Nice ones Doc! United Saul Bass would also look good on that profile of yours and that of the first livery United ever took on the DC-10. The one prior to Stars and Bars Friendship.

Nice work
One of my fav's DC-10s. I'd get this in 1/400 or better yet in 1/200. ( just make sure it is a proper -10)

Doc, if you do this one could it please be N914WA as it would be an awsome compliment to the Aurora model of this tail... for me the model was a welcomed addition to my collection as it is one of only two 10-10's that i have ever worked on..it of course wore G-TAOS in My Travel colors then.

It's actually going to be N902WA, but if you are up for it, it would be an easy matter to make it N914WA and not cost you any extra than the N902WA one that I am near to finishing. N914WA did wear the full 1987-89 Delta colors.

Hey JP, my buddy Jon flew this airplane with FedEx. He told me that they retired it the same day that they recieved their first 777. Very interesting!

Sweet trijet JP! It's really strange not seeing these flying widgets any longer. Excellent detail as always! I especially like the early engine, and tail banjo rendering.

I flew a Miami turn earlier this month, and after we landed and cleared Runway 36R in Memphis, we were given taxi instructions of Taxiway Yankee, hold short of Alpha for a company MD-10. To my surprise, N377FE was the MD-10 we gave way to. To me it was neat as we were in a MD-11, N527FE, another former Delta airplane, N812DE. I thought it was cool two Delta airplanes were meeting once again, even if they are distant cousins. Once I got to the crew room I looked at the fleet plan. FedEx did retire N377FE in the fall, but it was ferried from Victorville to LAX and had a "C" check done. It then flew for the holidays. Not sure what the plans are for it going forward. I looked at the MX history, and the logbook shows a total time of 90,800 hours, with 34,500 cycles. On another note, the plan for the 727 fleet is to have them all retired in 2015. By the way, very cool print! |

Thanks Jon! That's a great story about 377FE. There was a time when a plane was a plane and then somewhere along the way I discovered the rich history that sometimes lies behind the tail number.
Now for the real question, how is it that you put up with Chad/DFW?

You're right, some of them have very interesting careers. To me, they are like any other airline worker. Some are lucky and work for one airline their entire life, others bounce around all over the industry.
As far as Chad, that is a long and complicated answer.....I guess I took one for the team!

Because no manufacture has done a proper delivery DC-10-10, so many of them in 1/400 to be done!

For those of you that may be fans of the DC-10 or Widgetheads or both, this little gem is not to be missed. The USPS today delivered a copy of this magnificent print, and words nor these depictions here, come close to describing just how impressive this Mighty Ten really is! Together with the companion "Spaceship" in similar motif, this makes a worthwhile pair. The pearlescence effect is over the top and I will most assuredly be adding more to this new (for me) genre within the hobby. Thanks JP, you've done a marvelous job on these! |
